Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum Support in South Jersey

The perinatal period—pregnancy, birth, and postpartum—is such an exciting time. In South Jersey, we’re lucky to have so many incredible providers that it would be impossible to give props to every one of them in a single blog post.

That said, I’ve put together this non-exhaustive list of local rockstars who I love and trust and/or who have a particular specialty that can make a huge difference to your postpartum.

As a perinatal mental health specialist, I often talk about how the postpartum period is usually ignored when it comes to planning, but we need to change that. The truth is, PMAD (perinatal mood and anxiety disorders) risk factors can stem from our pregnancy and birth experiences. Birth trauma, complications, or just the overwhelming nature of the whole experience can impact mental health in ways that show up after your baby’s arrival. That’s why it’s so important to be prepared with a support team that has your back from the start—because setting yourself up for success in the postpartum period begins while you’re still pregnant.

So save this list, start to build your dream team, and then relax and enjoy the ride—you deserve it.

Prenatal Care Providers

  • OB-GYNs and Midwives

    • Home Birth: Not everyone’s comfortable with the idea of birthing at home, but for some, it’s the preferred choice. When hospitals fill you with anxiety, homebirth is a great option. Your home birth midwife will get to know you and you them, so that on the day of your birth, you know you are in the hands of a trusted person who knows and cares for you. I highly recommend home birth for neurodivergent moms. (Read more about home birth as it relates to neurodivergent moms here.)

    • Gentle Beginnings Midwifery Care
Heading to Virtua Voorhees (especially during rush hours) can actually take longer than heading to Elmer! If you’re looking for a birth center in Southern New Jersey, Gentle Beginnings is a solid choice.

    • Midwifery Care Associates
Offering home birth and hospital birth options, the midwives at MCA provide excellent prenatal care that insurance typically covers—meaning the only portion out-of-pocket is for the home birth itself.

    • Midwifery at Jefferson University Hospital
A trusted, hospital-based midwifery option for those looking for a balance of natural birth in a hospital setting.

    • Stacy A. McCrosson, MD and Kristen McCullen, MD
These obstetricians embrace birth as a natural event, not a medical emergency. As a doula, I loved working with them because they truly listen to your needs.

    • Virtua Midwifery
If a peaceful, home-like setting is what you're after but you’re not comfortable with home birth, Virtua Midwifery is a great option right next door.
